New Feature: Nosto placements and custom queries in checkout
Nosto-powered upsells can now pull products from a placement campaign you've built in your Nosto admin, or from a recommendation query you configure on the component itself. Big shout out to Nosto for all the support whilst developing this new integration.
What's new. Open any upsell component sourcing products from Nosto and you'll find a Recommendations mode setting with three choices:
- Current behaviour: keep the recommendations the component already uses. This is preselected, so nothing changes until you pick something else.
- Placement: use a placement campaign from your Nosto admin. Nosto decides which products appear based on the campaign rules you've set there, personalised to each customer and aware of what's in their cart.
- Custom query: set the recommendation query from the component, choosing between Viewed together and Bought together and how many products to show.
Choosing a placement. Clicking the placement field opens a picker listing the placements found in your Nosto account, grouped by the page they target, or you can type an ID in by hand. Use a placement that targets a standard page type; the cart page works best in checkout. Give the campaign a fallback in Nosto (best sellers, for example) so every customer sees products even when the campaign has nothing to show.
Testing before you go live. A Preview mode setting shows recommendations from unpublished Nosto campaigns while you're working in the checkout editor. Real customers never see preview campaigns, but it's still worth turning off once your campaign is published.
Reporting back to Nosto. Checkout impressions, clicks and add-to-carts from these components are now reported to Nosto against the customer's session, so the activity your checkout upsells drive shows up and gets attributed in your Nosto dashboards rather than going unseen.
Where to place these components. The new recommendation modes work on the new Upsell Component extension. If your upsell still sits in the deprecated Checkout Components block, move it across in the checkout editor before switching modes. See the note above about the new component-specific extensions.
Turning it on. This is an opt-in experiment while we refine it. Go to Settings → Integrations → Nosto, find New Nosto integration and choose Turn on. It's also listed on Settings → Experiments.
Plan availability. The Nosto integration is available on the Pro plan and above.
Existing setups. Your live Nosto components are untouched. They keep the recommendations behaviour they have today until you open one and change its mode. Turning the experiment back off hides the new settings, and any component you'd already pointed at a placement or custom query keeps working the way you configured it until you edit it.
