OpenAI has officially ditched its plans to let users buy products directly inside ChatGPT. Instead of handling checkout natively, purchases will now be redirected through to third-party apps and retailer websites.
The news, first reported by The Information, marks a significant shift from OpenAI's September 2025 launch of "Instant Checkout", a feature built in partnership with Shopify, Etsy, and Stripe that promised to let users discover and purchase products without ever leaving the chatbot.
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the pivot saying "We are evolving our commerce strategy within ChatGPT to better meet merchants and users where they are. Instant checkout is transitioning to apps, where purchases can occur more seamlessly."
Why It Failed: Users Browse, But They Don't Buy
We use chatbots for consideration, not conversion.
OpenAI's own internal findings revealed that while users were happy to research products, compare options, and ask for recommendations inside ChatGPT, very few actually completed a purchase there.
This shouldn't surprise anyone in ecommerce. Shoppers have deeply ingrained habits like saved payment methods, loyalty accounts, order histories and retailers they trust.
Shopify President Harley Finkelstein noted at a recent investor conference, that only about a dozen of Shopify's millions of merchants were actually selling through AI tools. The bottleneck, he said, is on the AI companies' side, the infrastructure simply isn't mature enough.
Beyond user behaviour, the technical challenges were enormous. OpenAI would have needed to synchronise live pricing, inventory, manual retailer onboarding and shipping across millions of products from thousands of merchants while managing complex tax compliance across jurisdictions.
Why This Is a Good Thing For Shopify Merchants
Your checkout now matters more than ever. No AI chatbot is going to replace the carefully optimised and brand-consistent checkout experience that converts browsers into buyers.
Let AI handle the top of the funnel for product discovery. But when it comes time to convert, customers are coming back to your store to a place they can trust and your checkout needs to be ready for them.
The Checkout Is Your Competitive Advantage
This is exactly why tools like Checkout Components exist and why smart Shopify Plus merchants are investing in their own checkout experience:
The brands that own their checkout experience, rather than outsourcing it to AI platforms are the ones building sustainable revenue growth.
The lesson is clear: invest in the experience you control. AI will send you traffic. Your checkout needs to convert it.
